BUT I really hesitated with another one that I positively LOVE. It's X ( et vous déroulez).   2. Is there a relation between Poe's life and his work ? Ici, la réponse attendue tourne autour de vos connaissances à propos de l'auteur, et de son oeuvre en général. Having married is 13 year old cousin and lost all the important women in his life, Poe certainly had a certain vision for female characters in his work. He wrote that the "most poetic topic is a young woman, dying." On the other hand, his idea of the perverse doesn't seem to be linked / correlated to his life.   3.   1st SECTION our impressions about the first paragraph... it's a description of nature. it speaks about spring as green, and winter as white. it seems easier than E.A. Poe. lost & confused / vocab is difficult, will I understand the rest of the story? The very first paragraph is a depiction of a solitary place in Steinbeck's favourite playground : the state of California. Here, we are introduced to a little "sandy bank" of the Salinas River. The words used by Steinbeck are vivid, almost poetical : the water "twinkles" and the foothills are "golden." It gives that  incipit  a lyrical twist ( =touch )/ This  incipit  has a lyrical twist to it. Steinbeck describes the scene the way a painter would, using light and colours to convey (= transmettre ) a feeling of harmony and tranquility to the reader. Everything is still and quiet. Everything is where it should be.

  Intro Today we started reading the first paragraph. Here are a few words that we didn't understand at first : mottled                 twinkling juncture               ' coons sycamore              narrow spreadpads         slopes               split-wedge        willow We used online image tools to visualize some of the words that described trees.  This first paragraph describes the setting in a very poetic way, using the lexical field of nature. There's a painting-like quality in the description. The Hellbound Heart , Clive Barker, 1986 Summary : a man called Frank tries to solve a puzzle box made by someone named Lemarchand. This puzzle is a complex music box, and it is compared to Chinese puzzles found in Hong-Kong. It's got a "perverse logic" to it.   Characterization :  Frank is described as being curious, persevering and looking for answers. He's also intelligent, and a bit of a traveller. Coincidentally, he will be one of the villains of the story. The fact that it's a third person narrative certainly helps : by identifying with him, we'll understand his objectives later on. The other character is the box : it's personified with human attributes (it's got "logic" and it has two distinct origins). It also works as a link, as a reference point with Poe and the Gothic literature : it's said to be "perverse" and "sublime."
