Interstellar 2

What's your favourite movie?

Here are some observations we made :

 - characters are very important : they are our door into the movie / book. We are meant (nous sommes censés) to identify with them, or to reject them.

- Tragedy is one of two major, essential styles of fiction, the other being Comedy, as defined by Aristotle. The book on Comedy has been lost (The Name of the Rose, U. Eco). Tragedy = catharsis, fear & pity.

- The plot in a movie or in a book is more than interesting, it is essential. It can "speak to the audience." Some movies are "captivating," they have a "spirit" that we connect to, they "move" us, they are sometimes described as "magical."

Eg: important : paramount, far-reaching, etc.

Watching Interstellar, the opening credit

The very first images of the movie are the logos of the studios (WB, Paramount). They describe studios and open skies, but they have a yellowish, dirty tint to them. We can also see the logo of C. Nolan's company, Syncopy, written in a complex shape : it's a labyrinth, a maze, a daedalus. It may give us a hint about the philosophy behind the movie, and behind Nolan's career. Then we can see the shelf (l'étagère) of a library covered in dust, with a rocket toy on it.

Then we can see a field ; food seems to be important, an old woman says her father was a farmer, and many other people too. And after that, we can see a plane. The pilot seemed to dream of an accident / a crash he had. Maybe he suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder).
